What are Tibetan bowls?
The ancient Tibetan bowls, also called singing bowls or Himalayan bowls, were bowls made of a 7 metal alloy. They range in size from three to thirteen inches (and more). Each one is fine-tuned to a specific base note, but one can hear 3 to 5 notes, plus harmonics. Originally made in Tibet, the bowls now come from Nepal, India or Bhutan and contain from 3 to 5 metals.
What are they used for?
Tibetan bowls are used for meditation and are effective tools in the healing process of stress related conditions. They can help to:
Reduce stress
Engage the relaxation response “effortlessly”
Reduce brain activity and body temperature
Inhibit pain
Deepen meditative states
Balance chakras
Heal past emotional trauma and break through limiting behavior patterns
Relieve headaches, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, asthma, arthritis, muscular pain, etc.
How do they work?
Sound vibrations affect and change the structure of water. The vibrations of the Tibetan bowls penetrate deep into the tissues and cells to re-tune and re-harmonize our bodies which are made up of over 70% water. Each bowl is fine-tuned to a precise note, each chakra corresponds to a specific note and each of these energy centers known as chakras has precise physical, emotional and energetic properties. Repeated stress can cause imbalance and possibly dis-ease. The beautiful sound of these wonderful bowls will relax you and their vibrations help you heal on many levels.
Vibrations and Brain Waves
The human body is a true transmitter of vibrations and electromagnetic waves. A healthy body is "tuned" and vibrates at its own frequency, while the frequency of a diseased organ is disturbed. The brain in its normal operating state emits Beta waves. Alpha waves are produced in a state of deep meditation and calm. By measuring the waves produced by Tibetan bowls (singing bowls), researchers observed that all emit a wave pattern similar to Alpha waves produced by the brain. The bowls provide a state of deep relaxation and a feeling of open space within, in resonance or harmony with the different body systems.
The vibrations of the bowls resonate with the body
Tibetan bowls, gongs and tingshas recreate the original harmonic frequency and stimulate the body to regain its own harmonic frequency in the vibrating frequency of the bowl. Stimulated by the powerful vibrations of the bowls, the body can then re-synchronize its own frequency, and resonate again in agreement with the subtle bodies. Once aligned, the physical body, soul and mind are ready for expansion of consciousness and healing.
What is a sound massage?
A sound massage is an individual and private treatment practiced in a peaceful setting promoting relaxation. You lie down on a yoga mat and the bowls are placed all around you and sometimes on you. The vibrations from the bowls massage you to the cellular level and produce a deep relaxation similar to meditation, but with no effort on your part. Just listen to the sound of the bowls, lke you wold listen to ocean waves. Wear confortable clothing, with no buttons, metal or belts (jogging or yoga attire). See services.
How many bowls are used in a sound massage?
In a sound massage session, I generally use 7 bowls corresponding to the 7 main chakras, but I can use more or less, depending on what is required.
What is a harmonizing concert?
It is a concert whereby we harmonize our energies, our chakras with those of the Tibetan bowls (which are purifying) and obtain a deep relaxation state. The concerts last 1 hr and are offered to a maximum of 20 people. Bring your yoga mat and lie with your head in the direction of the bowls, or remain seated on the mat or a chair. For dates, place, cost, etc, please consult the activities page. I also perform half-hour concerts for special occasions.
How does a harmonizing concert unfold?
We begin harmonizing all the chakras by chanting the corresponding vowels together, accompanied by the bowls. This is also called Toning.
For this part of the concert, you can sit with your back straight, eyes closed, concentrating on each of your chakras, its color or its function (which I will give you as we go).
Your hands can remain on your knees with your palms facing upward or they can be opened one on top of the other, palms up and placed in front of each chakra.
I'll strike each bowl and we will sing its corrresponding vowel together 3X on the note of the bowl. Don't worry if you don’t sing on key. Try more to feel the purifying effect of the sound on each of your chakras. Direct the sound to the chakra.
Then I play the bowls for about 15 minutes while you lie on the mats with your head in the direction of the bowls and relax. On occasion, I have guests who will guide you in meditation while I play the bowls. These concerts are called Harmonizing/Meditative Concerts. During these concerts, the person guiding the meditation will take over at this point, while I accompagny him on the bowls.
After that, I will play the bowls for about fifteen minutes to help you integrate the meditation and to deeply relax.
Then the meditation guide will close the meditation while I play some more. I will then guide you back into the here and now.
